Abstract
Translation should consider the equivalent text between the first language (SL) and the second language (TL). The study tries to analyze the translation of homonymous and polysemous words in Bahasa Indonesia into English by Google Translate program. It observes the common semantic errors, more specifically the semantic causes of errors, resulted from the program. The theories used to analyze homonymous and polysemous words structure errors of Google Translate translation are semantics, translation, homonymy and polysemy, and ambiguity. This study applies a descriptive qualitative method. Google Translate tends to translate literally rather than contextually. This causes lexical ambiguity. Based on the result of the study, it is expected that the next research will analyze the various meaning in sentence, such as pragmatic meaning, intentional meaning, connotative meaning, denotative meaning, social meaning, deictic meaning, and so on. Furthermore, it is expected that it will be useful for computer programmer to create new advanced programs in order to minimize errors.
